Your Skin vs Oxidative Stress

As you know, oxygen is life. Breathing in oxygen is essential in order for your body to function properly or in better words, to survive. Every day we expose ourselves to free radicals; they are unstable molecules whose naturally paired electrons have been split up making it active in search of stealing another electron from a healthy cell to become stable. When the unstable cell steals an electron from the healthy cell, the healthy cell is now damaged causing it to go search for an electron so it can be complete. Then, you have an endless cycle of thieving, unhealthy cells in search of replacing their missing electron which can wreak havoc on your skin and even your insides.

Free Radicals are caused by over exposing yourself to the sun, smoking, pollution, eating junk food excessively, too much exercise, alcohol, and even some medications. Oxidative stress occurs when you combine free radicals with oxygen and the free radicals are greater than the body’s ability to detoxify them. When oxidative stress occurs the free radicals can cause premature signs of aging, uneven skin tone and texture, and even break down the essential proteins that support the skin causing sagging.

Think of an apple…  What happens when an apple is cut in half?  Within a very short period of time, oxidation occurs. Thus, the rule of thumb is to saturate fresh cut apples in lemon or pineapple juices, both of which naturally contain antioxidants, to slow this process.  The same process occurs on our skin while not as immediately visible as an apple.
