As you know, oxygen is life. Breathing in oxygen is essential in order for your body to function properly or in better words, to survive. Every day we expose ourselves to free radicals; they are unstable molecules whose naturally paired electrons have been split up making it active in search of stealing another electron from a healthy cell to become stable. When the unstable cell steals an electron from the healthy cell, the healthy cell is now damaged causing it to go search for an electron so it can be complete. Then, you have an endless cycle of thieving, unhealthy cells in search of replacing their missing electron which can wreak havoc on your skin and even your insides.
Free Radicals are caused by over exposing yourself to the sun, smoking, pollution, eating junk food excessively, too much exercise, alcohol, and even some medications. Oxidative stress occurs when you combine free radicals with oxygen and the free radicals are greater than the body’s ability to detoxify them. When oxidative stress occurs the free radicals can cause premature signs of aging, uneven skin tone and texture, and even break down the essential proteins that support the skin causing sagging.
Think of an apple… What happens when an apple is cut in half? Within a very short period of time, oxidation occurs. Thus, the rule of thumb is to saturate fresh cut apples in lemon or pineapple juices, both of which naturally contain antioxidants, to slow this process. The same process occurs on our skin while not as immediately visible as an apple.
Great ways to fight against oxidative stress include taking care of your skin topically in conjunction with a healthy diet of foods loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants are reducing agents and limit oxidative damage. The key nutrients you want to look for that scavenge free radicals are vitamin C, E, A, and beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A when you eat it. Nutritional supplements containing these key antioxidants are also important including the powerful free radical scavenger Pycnogenol®.
Most Elysee products contain antioxidant activity the help to prevent free radical damage and oxidative stress to the skin, but there are a few we would like to focus on.
*The Pink Lemon Toner contains lemon essential oil that provides natural vitamin C for natural detoxification and hydrolyzed collagen that prevents loss of firmness.
*Firmance™ Pycnogenol® Serum contains a powerful antioxidant that is 20 times more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times more powerful than vitamin E. This product also has a firming botanical complex that helps reduce the early signs of aging and lack of firmness.

*BioAccel-SB™ Serum also has vitamin C and E as well as DMAE which improves skin’s resilience, tone, and texture.
*YouthSpan™ products feature the Telomere Technology that promotes cell lifespan for youthful skin. The YouthSpan™ A.G.E Control Gel Therapy Masque features vitamins, carbohydrates, and amino acids which optimize Melatonin, an antioxidant in our skin, helping to reinforce skin’s own natural defenses against UV light, free radicals, and glycation stress. The YouthSpan™ Enviro-Shield Tinted Veil is a self-adjusting smoothing tinted moisturizer that has an antioxidant activated by heat and light that elicits antiaging benefits on the skin. This one-two punch beauty treatment provides topical defense against damaging visible light by scavenging free radicals caused by exposure.
Taking care of your insides is just as important as taking care of your skin and eating a healthy diet is a great way to do both and prevent oxidative damage. You can’t expect skincare products to work to the best of their ability if you don’t have some sort of balance to your diet. Eating junk food and drinking sugary drinks like soda aid not only in the formation of free radicals, but of glycation.
Water and natural teas like green tea, black tea, and chamomile tea are loaded with thousands of natural chemicals called phytonutrients. Carotenoids and flavonoids are two key phytonutrients found in water and most natural tea that help protect the skin against UV damage, improves skin hydration, and skin condition. In addition to phytonutrients, natural teas are packed full of antioxidants and natural detoxifiers. Leafy green vegetables are loaded with vitamins A, C, E, B, K, and even iron. Spinach, kale, broccoli, watercress, and collards also have calcium, magnesium, and potassium which are all essential to the health of hair, skin, and nails. Orange root ground dwellers like carrots, sweet potatoes, and winter squash are potent with beta-carotene which is what gives them their orange color. When beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A it plays a key role in the appearance of skin, immune system, and eye health.
Collagen is an elastic-like compound found in the skin giving it support and shape like springs in a mattress as Linda would say. Fruits like oranges, pineapples, grapefruit, kiwi, lemon, limes, and guava are loaded with vitamin C. Vitamin C is not only essential to make collagen but it also acts as an antioxidant and fights against free radical pollutants acting like an internal cleanup crew. Keratin, collagen, and elastin are the key proteins that support the skin, prevent wrinkles, and aid in the strength and appearance of skin. Add foods like eggs, milk, yoghurt, beans, lean meats, and nuts are a great source of protein. Another great source of protein and Omega-3 and Omega-6 are seafood: salmon, mackerel, tuna, shrimp, and crab are jam-packed with Omega-3 and 6 and promote healthy, hydrated skin.
